Delgado Welcomes National Conference in Adult Education

April 29, 2019

The Delgado Community College Adult Education Program sent 35 faculty and staff members to the annual conference of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) in New Orleans March 31 - April 3 at the Marriott Hotel, 555 Canal Street.

Delgado Adult Education Operations Manager Libby Favrot serves as the president of the Louisiana Association for Public, Community & Adult Education (LAPCAE), the statewide association for adult education that co-hosted the event, and expressed gratitude about the opportunity to co-host a national conference dedicated to the adult student population.

“Louisiana serves over 35,000 adult learners every year,” said Favrot. “This national conference was an incredible opportunity to bring our network together for three days of learning and professional development while also showcasing the extraordinary work our colleagues around Louisiana do every day.”

“Delgado also sent a team of Student Ambassadors to a full-day training to build advocacy and community organizing skills,” said Favrot. “Involving students in our program development is a core value and empowers our students with agency to grow in their careers and self-advocate for their families and communities.”

Several Delgado staff members presented at the conference, including:

  • Christopher McFarland on peer observation and on pronunciation in ESL.
  • Chyna Andrews on finding age-appropriate resources for teaching low-level literacy.
  • Lei Lani Michel on how to expand learning opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Joey Lehrman on the national award-winning model for distance learning in adult education.
