Delgado will host "New Orleans Free People of Color: Accomplishments, Culture, and
The Vote,” a presentation by Givonna Joseph, founder and artistic director of the award-winning OperaCréole. The event will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. in Isaac Delgado
Hall (Building 1), Timothy K. Baker Theatre, First Floor.
Mezzo-soprano Givonna Joseph, founder and artistic director of OperaCréole, is internationally
recognized for her research on 19th-century New Orleans composers of color and Creole
history. Joseph has been featured in roles in many New Orleans opera productions and
on platforms like NBC Nightly News and NPR. She and her daughter, Aria Mason, have
garnered acclaim for reviving lost operas by composers such as Samuel Coleridge Taylor
and William Grant Still. Former education director for the Louisiana Philharmonic
Orchestra, Joseph has contributed to several educational documentaries and teaches
at the College of Music and Media at Loyola University New Orleans. She also serves
on various opera boards and received the 2022 Torchbearers Award from the National
Coalition of 100 Black Women.
The event is hosted by Delgado’s honors program and is free and open to the public.
