From Veteran to Entrepreneur: A Journey through the Veterans Upward Bound Program

October 30, 2024

James Smith, a U.S. Army veteran, found himself at a crossroads after years away from the classroom. Like many veterans, transitioning from military service back to civilian life came with its challenges, especially when it came to returning to education. Thanks to the TRiO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program at Delgado Community College, James embarked on a new chapter—one that is bringing him closer to achieving his dream of owning a successful catering business.

The Road to Reinvention

James’ wife was the first to introduce him to the Veterans Upward Bound program, a step that reignited his passion for education and business. “For me, it was a refresher to get myself back into school,” James explained. His goal was clear: to earn a degree in hospitality management and equip himself with the knowledge and skills necessary to grow his catering company, a passion he has nurtured for over 30 years.

What set the VUB program apart for James was its supportive learning environment. “The teachers are amazing,” he shared. “They teach you based on your knowledge, step by step. They help you—there’s no rush.” This personalized approach was crucial for him after decades away from school. The program didn’t just teach James new skills; it also helped him regain confidence in essential academic areas like reading, writing, and mathematics.

A Program That Changes Lives

The Veterans Upward Bound program is designed to assist veterans like James in overcoming educational obstacles after years away from formal schooling. Offering academic support in subjects ranging from math and English to college preparation skills, the program provides the tools and guidance necessary for veterans to bridge the gap between military life and academic success.

For veterans who may have spent 10, 20, or even 40 years away from a classroom, returning to school can feel overwhelming. However, VUB offers a roadmap to success. “School is a whole lot different than what it used to be,” James noted. The program not only refreshed his memory on essential academic skills but also rekindled his motivation to pursue his hospitality management degree. “It keeps me going; it keeps me pushing ahead for my family,” he said.

A Bright Future Ahead

Looking to the future, James remains excited about the opportunities ahead. His time in the Veterans Upward Bound program not only helped him return to an academic mindset but also reinvigorated his passion for business. With dreams of expanding his catering company, Birdie James Catering Co., James is on track to earn his degree and apply the skills he’s learning to grow his business.

For other veterans considering the program, James offers a clear message: “This is what you want to get out of this program and why you need to be in this program.” For him, the Veterans Upward Bound program provided more than just a refresher—it gave him the confidence, skills, and support necessary to return to education and pursue his goals.

On Saturday, October 5, 2024, James and 11 other veteran-participants of the TRiO Veterans Upward Bound program at Delgado Community College were recognized as they embarked on their life's next mission as college students. They are proof that transitioning from military service to academic and professional success is possible. With the support of programs like Veterans Upward Bound, more veterans can follow in their footsteps toward a brighter future.
