“My leadership is not just about guiding others; it's about empowering them to realize their potential and achieve their goals,” said Jennifer Fernandez, dean of nursing at Delgado Community College's Charity School of Nursing.

Having attended Delgado herself, Fernandez brings more than 15 years of professional experience in nursing and academia. Her leadership philosophy emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement. By promoting open communication and trust, she creates an inclusive and supportive environment where students and faculty alike can thrive.

Her genuine enthusiasm for student and faculty achievements, coupled with her focus on mentorship and skill-building, has cultivated a culture of innovation and collaboration within the nursing school. “Celebrating successes, big and small, is important to me as it boosts morale and motivates everyone to strive for excellence,” Fernandez said.

A key aspect of Fernandez’s vision is the integration of cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), into the nursing curriculum. She believes these tools will enhance student learning by offering realistic simulations and personalized experiences, ultimately preparing students for future clinical practice and credentialing exams. Fernandez has actively collaborated with Delgado’s grant and IT departments to secure funding for faculty certification programs, which will further support the nursing program’s expansion.

After working as a registered nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, Fernandez joined Delgado Charity School of Nursing as an adjunct instructor in 2014 and then a full-time faculty member in 2016. She then served as assistant dean from 2022 to 2024 and has held leadership roles such as president of the Louisiana chapter of the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Her career is highlighted by numerous accolades and a strong commitment to healthcare advocacy. She has served on accreditation boards and traveled nationwide to evaluate other nursing programs. In 2023, Fernandez was inducted into the prestigious Marquis Who's Who.

Fernandez obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from William Carey University in 2007 and a Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of Mary in 2016. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree with a projected graduation in 2027. Her dedication to nursing education, alongside her background in pediatric oncology and healthcare advocacy, positions Fernandez as a respected leader in the field, poised to guide Delgado Community College’s nursing program to new heights.

“I am committed to fostering a forward-thinking educational environment. Together, we can build a community that empowers and inspires,” Fernandez said.
