Delgado Hosts First Louisiana Gateway English and Math Student Success Symposium

February 19, 2024

On April 19, 2024, Delgado Community College will host the inaugural Louisiana Gateway English and Math Student Success Symposium (LA GEMSS), funded by a Departmental Enhancement grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents.

The symposium is for faculty, administrators, academic support staff and other stakeholders across Louisiana’s colleges and universities to share best practices for corequisite math and English instruction, to exchange ideas about academic and administrative support outside of the classroom and to discuss other topics relevant student success.

Dr. Saundra McGuire, Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University, is the keynote speaker and will share insight into metacognitive practices to incorporate into the classroom to improve student outcomes.

“We are very excited to host the inaugural LA GEMSS at Delgado and look forward to it becoming an annual event that brings together educators, administrators and support staff in Louisiana to share best practices in corequisite English and mathematics courses,” said Emily Cosper, Dean of Delgado’s School of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences and Education, who is also organizing the symposium. “We were inspired by the California Achievement Project (CAP) and the Conference of Developmental Education (CADE) to create an event to foster a statewide discussion about how to support our students in these gateway courses. We all have a vested interest in our students’ success. Our hope is this conference becomes part of the solution and builds collaboration and expertise across the state.”
