Delgado Opens Maritime Training Center Today with COVID-19 Safety Protocols

May 18, 2020

Beginning Monday, May 18, the Maritime and Industrial Training Center at Delgado Community College in New Orleans has reopened.

Delgado has worked with industry partners and the U.S. Coast Guard to put a process in place to meet training needs in the "new normal." Students will still benefit from the knowledge and experience of qualified instructors, and be able to ask questions and interact, all while staying safe. With variances from the Coast Guard, a combination of distance learning and modified on-site practical sessions will be used to deliver high-quality training.

The lecture portions of courses will now be online, enabled by virtual reality, Zoom Pro and cameras in classrooms. Interactive streaming of instructor-led classes will create an atmosphere just like being in the classroom with reports due, homework sent, assessment sheets and taking breaks. All testing and practical training will occur when students report to campus.

Safety will begin at the main gate with temperature checks by campus police. Classroom facilities will be sanitized from top to bottom and then maintained with hourly cleanings. Masks and gloves will be provided, and to keep class sizes small to minimize exposure, staff and classes will be staggered. To maintain social distancing and limit exposure to students in common areas, some chairs have been removed from classrooms and the break area.

Registration is open for classes at the Center. For more information or to enroll, email fireschool@dcc.edu or call the main line at 504- 671-6620.
