Delgado’s Technical Skills Expo Exposes New Orleans Students To In-Demand Career Options
October 13, 2017
Delgado Community College will host its fourth Technical Skills Expo (TSE) on Monday, Oct. 16 and Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Jefferson Campus, located at 5200 Blair Dr. in Metairie.
The expo, sponsored by Chevron, aims to introduce high school students to high-wage and high-demand occupations in the Southern Region.
“Through the expo, Delgado is working to expose students to the endless career opportunities available to them,” said Dr. Arnel Cosey, vice chancellor for student affairs. “Our goal is encourage them to enter the workforce with the skill sets needed for success.”
The TSE showcases the diverse programs offered by Delgado to high school students through its Dual Enrollment (DE) program, which features programs such as electrical, automotive, water technology, wastewater management, welding and instrumentation.
Since the first expo in 2013, Delgado and its business partners have provided overviews of occupations with real-life demonstrations on state-of-the-art equipment to more than 2,000 students. With an increase in the college's dual enrollment program, the TSE continues to ignite an interest in many students, organizers said.
Over the past three years, 30 individuals have completed the DE program, most of whom attended the TSE, and there are many more in the pipeline. The most recent class of graduates, known as the “W-E 23” from Warren Easton Charter High School, walked across the graduation stage this past semester.
“Chevron is pleased to partner with Delgado in hosting this exciting event,” said Leah Brown, Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico public affairs manager. “Over two days, through live demonstrations, hundreds of young minds will learn more about the tremendous opportunities within local industries. For many students, the Technical Skills Expo will hopefully be a first step to a promising career.”
