Why study Teaching Grades 1-5 at Delgado Community College?
The Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) for Grades 1-5 is a transfer degree program that addresses the requirements of the new Baccalaureate of Science in Elementary Education offered by the public and private colleges of education in Louisiana to increase the state pool of highly qualified teachers. It also, provides the highest quality of foundational coursework specifically designed to produce teacher candidates for state university and colleges of education. In addition to a comprehensive degree plan that easily transfers to four-year institutions, our Teaching 1-5 department proudly offers the following:
- Earn an Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) for Grades 1-5.
- Work as a paraprofessional (teacher’s aide) in a school.
- Affordable tuition and financial aid for those who qualify
- Transfer of credit to a university to become a cerified teacher in the school system.

Mission Statement
The mission of Delgado Community College Teaching Grades 1-5 department is to provide
the highest quality foundational course work specifically designed to produce teacher
candidates for university colleges of education who are effective communicators with
knowledge, shills, and dispositions to meet the diverse educational needs of Louisiana
schools and their students. In addition, it is the mission of the program to prepare
those who plan to continue their education and obtain advanced degrees in the teaching
field.
Application Forms and Information
The Delgado program has additional admission criteria and admits students each fall and spring semester. After enrolling at Delgado for two semesters, students must contact Delgado’s program office for Teacher Education to initiate the application process. The admission committee selects qualified individuals with potential for contributions to the profession.
Program Offerings
For students whose career interests are in teaching and paraprofessional (teacher’s aide), the Teaching Grades 1-5 program provides preparation for transfer to senior colleges, and for professional advancement.
